How are your Q5 behaving on the slippery roads?
« on: December 19, 2009, 01:56:23 AM »

Just though I would see how everyone else is getting on with their Q5 on the icy roads. So far we have been very impressed (the BMW has stayed firmly on the drive, after last years frustrations!).

It's not that much about the car, it is about the tires...

We got some snow and for giggles I tried it with All-Season crap that came along with it and as I knew most all-seasons sucks, I slid around and I had hard time to slow down.

Came home and swapped my Blizzaks on and went back to play and I couldn't play because it sticks like a glue...

Ice is another story and that needs studded tires.

Here is hands on about traction,

We finally got some snow   ;D  so much that neighbours 4x4 Ford Pick-up truck with open differentials couldn't get out and even I got almost stuck when mine bottomed up as streets weren't ploughed yet.

At start I was trying to avoid spinning as that would just polish the surface under, after I got some speed, little spin wasn't that dangerous....

(28 Dec 09 video updated to higher resolution)

Went around the city, pulled out 2 passenger cars and one Trailblazer, finally got home and it was time to clean rims   :o

Hammer is modern multitool...

Quattro with real winter tires is great combination and that was only reason why mine was only one car that got out from our cul-de-sac.

All FWD passenger cars with summers got stuck,
All AWD SUV's with summers got stuck,
4x4 Ford full-size pick-up was able to reverse a bit but couldn't turn so we had to push him to move to go back home.

For mine no matter it came with Dunlop Grand Trek All-Seasons, I bought 2nd set with Bridgestone Blizzak's.

It was funny when I took mine out from garage, folks showeling their front yard looked at me with the look on their face "no no we don't want to push you too".

Once I passed them I got thumbs up and wife who took that shaky video told me 4x4 Ford owner 2 sons were pointing my tail the way "how the heck that tiny toy goes but ours doesn't".

Now I can say pennies well spent   ;D

So each of you who drive on snow, drive slow,  slow down early and watch out others sliding around so you get home safe and sound.

Happy holidays  ;D

Yeah, I used to get a kick out of that with my Subaru Outback. Once I pulled a neighbour out of the snowbank at the lake, he had a brand new 4Runner and had climbed on top of the snowbank and was completely stuck. I pulled out my tow-rope and pulled him out of there like it was nothing.
