Converting TPMS with sensors (2009) to indirect (2010)
« on: November 10, 2009, 07:02:03 PM »
I need some help from fellow Q5 owners.

Take your service book and check your sticker.

IM me your model year, manufacturing date (larger circle) and ABS model code (smaller circle)

Mine would be   2009 - 12/08 - 1AS

Guys with A4's have already vag-com their system and Q5 works same way.

Sorry but have read this and have no idea what it's about. Please could you explain in terms that are easy for someone like me who is not at all technical.
Thank you

2009 Q5 model Tire Pressure Monitoring System have sensors on each rim to sense tire pressure and this system is called direct system, car computer monitors each sensor (lack of signal or signal with data) and informs driver. Sensors are not in the rim, it is unit that haves air valve and is mounted to air valve hole on rim.

2009 Pros and cons, good is that sensors / car computer give pressure data right away when you put key on slot and power comes on.
Bad is that sensors costs some $€£ and also causes more balancing weights on rims. Sensor expected lifetime is about 5 years or so (I saw article saying sensors should last 10 years but then I also saw owners at VW Touareg forum replacing sensors after 5 years and the issue is that if one fails and 3 are good, does owner replace just one and wait till others fail and go through the tire removing show again or replace all 4 at same time and know they will work at least next 5 years?)

2010 Q5 models have TPMS function maintained by ABS sensors counting revolution on each tire and by comparing the values to earlier values it detects is pressure ok or have tire lost some. This system is called as indirect.

2010 pros and cons, good is that there is no air pressure sensors on each wheel so folks at north with winter sets (like me) doesn't need to buy additional set (and shed €$£) and less balancing weights on each wheel. The bad is that car needs to move some distance on straight road to rotate tires enough and equally so computer could calculate does each wheel rotation in X distance match earlier values.

Some could complain 2010 bad is bad as car have to move but to me that is no problem as I always do visual check on tires when I approach the car to make sure there is no flat tires.

The pressure loosing becomes a problem if tire looses pressure while car moves and it is up to drivers skills to detect the issue, either “butt feeling” or by vehicle behavior (or by visual through side mirrors but this works only for rear tires) or by TPMS system. I have gone through “butt feeling” with passenger cars and mirrors with trucks as while driving 18-wheeler I heard low “thump” sound and for a moment being confused by sound I noticed through the side mirror that one trailer tire sidewall was getting chubbier than others so I pulled over before it would get totally flat and damage 1000 € aluminum truck rim.

Ok back to the sticker....

It's not your bank account nor anything that I could trace you and come knock your door on one of those gloomy evenings and say trick or treat smell my feet   ;D

So kindly pick the book and post or PM me the 3 details.

The reason I need is to track down when 1AS changes to something else (new ABS unit with indirect capability)as that defines can 2009 model owners use vag-com and activate their indirect system.
